2007 Symbolism - Part Two: Environment

2007 has set records in terms of weather. There has seemingly been one disaster after another, as the climate and perhaps the very Earth itself continues to go through an escalating change. What is especially notable is that many of these weather disasters are occurring either in unusual areas or are of a magnitude not previously seen.
Floods
Between 1 June and 26 July the UK had some of the worst floods it has ever experienced. Wikipedia has a list of all flooded areas in the UK.
China, India, Indonesia, Sudan, and Africa all suffered some of the worst floods in recent history. In all cases the message of water is very clear.
Drought
One part of the world or another has always suffered from drought – but rarely has it been a Western or established country.
Australia is experiencing its worst drought for what some say is 1000 years. Earlier this year, the Australian Prime Minster was proposing shutting off water supplies to 50,000 farmers in the Murray-Darling basin.
Alabama, Georgia, South and North Carolina – in the US are running very low on water supplies. In some reports Georgia has less than 3 months of water left. That’s a pretty damn serious situation for a Western country. In October the Governor of Georgia declared a national emergency.

Hurricanes
On August 20, Hurricane Dean was upgraded to category 5 status and made landfall at that strength on the Mexican Yucatán Peninsula. When Hurricane Felix reached category 5 status, 2007 became one of four recorded Atlantic seasons that have had more than one category 5 storm; the others being 1960, 1961 and 2005, and the only time two Atlantic hurricanes have ever made landfall at Category 5 strength in the same season. Hurricane Humberto also became the fastest developing storm on record to be so close to land. It strengthened from a 35 mph (55 km/h) tropical depression to an 90 mph (150 km/h) hurricane in 14 hours while 15 miles (24 km) off the coast of Texas. September had a record tying 8 storms but the strengths and durations of the storms were low
Further to all that the strongest typhoon in recorded Japanese history occurred on 16 July 2007
Back in January 2007 Kyrill, a violent extratropical cyclone moved across the Atlantic, hitting Ireland, Britain and then mainland Europe. Such powerful windstorms are a rarity in Europe.
Tornados
On 8 August a tornado hit Brooklyn, New York – somewhat of a rare occurrence in itself. This particular tornado was the strongest ever recorded in that area.
Not to be outdone the UK also experienced strong tornados during 2007 ; although tornadoes do occur in the UK they rarely appear on this scale or cause this sort of damage.
Earthquakes
The earthquakes in 2007 have probably been no more numerous than previous years however one thing of note is that the earthquakes have often occurred at the same time as hurricanes, and often on either the same longitude or latitude.
Sun Flares, Heat and Yellowstone
The volcanic remains in Yellowstone, USA are still very active. Recent measurements show that the crust is moving faster than ever before:
Chang’s team found that over the 30 months, the caldera’s floor rose by a total of 18 cm – at its fastest, the crust was moving at a rate of 7 cm per year. The researchers say that is three times faster than has ever been observed since measurements began in 1923. “The uplift is still going on today, but at a little slower rate,” says team-member Robert Smith, also of the University of Utah.
The Sun has seen some pretty impressive activity this year, one notable example is the occurrence of solar flares in the suns chromosphere, which until now wasn’t thought to be possible.
In the UK, Australia and the US, the spring and summer set records for being the hottest ever.
Symbolism
Taking the elements in their traditional interpretation of Fire, Earth, Water and Air in the most literal sense – they have all moved into a tremendous uproar of activity. In that sense, the elements are the foundation of physical reality. In this context, the fact that the environment has seen such a dramatic escalation of change speaks volumes.
Philosophically, the elements are spiritual aspects – and again this change of temperament is indicating spiritual development (or perhaps evolution). In religious terms this has been seen many times in the great deluges which are always followed by spiritual change.
The idea of Global Warming is being used as a catch all term for what is occurring on Earth. Yet there are very few theories that show why pollution would cause earthquakes…and of those they don’t hold up to much scrutiny. And besides that, the other planets within our solar system are also experiencing climate change.
Humanity continues to put itself as a central cause in the functioning of the universe, an attitude resulting from the dominance of masculine energy which is very self-centered and provocative. That attitude of ‘control’ will symbolically become more and more apparent until it appears to everyone as a ridiculous comedy.
And in the end the term “Earth Changes” is far more fitting than either Global Warming or Climate Change.
