Click here for a guide on playing Space Giraffe.
Altered states of consciousness and video games do not normally go hand in hand. Space Giraffe on XBox 360 Arcade Live on the other hand is something entirely different. Why am I writing about a video game again? Well, Space Giraffe whilst many find difficult to play is nevertheless very interesting for its affect on the players awareness. Just so that you can get an idea of what I am talking about, here is a short video showing how Space Giraffe actually plays:
I have written about binaural beats a number of times - and this game has a very similar affect. You may be able to get a sense of that feeling from the video alone.
Space Giraffe very much is about a combined sensory experience. When you get into a certain form of meditative state, your awareness withdraws somewhat from your body and you no longer concentrate on specific singular senses. Instead your awareness is much more focused on the totality of your senses. It is this feeling that Space Giraffe mirrors most closely.
This form of technology in the home is fascinating, and it is a good tool for experiencing different realms of your being. Of particular note is that if you pay close attention to your body, senses and awareness you will feel a gradual change, as your mind sinks deeper and deeper into a semi-altered state. Like with meditation, you can either go along for the ride, or subtly guide the experience.
Space Giraffe also highlights the different relationships people have with their senses and their mind. There is a tendency to believe that we are our thoughts. So what happens when something removes our thoughts from the process of our awareness? That is a thing many will have issue with, however it is an excellent way in which to judge the hold your ego-personality has over your body.
In the end, Space Giraffe could be considered a form of brainwave entrainment. And on a website that focuses on consciousness and awareness, it is certainly something worth pointing out.
