Power of the Word

There is an amazing power in words, it isn’t without reason the words; “In the beginning there was the word” have such powerful meaning. It is often written about the power of the word of God, but perhaps we should give more consideration to the power of the word of humankind. Words carry with them a great weight and can bring both profound and devastating affects. This isn’t any secret power – although it is true that it isn’t widely recognised. One thing that many people will no doubt have seen by now is the work by Dr. Emoto and his “Messages from Water”. At the risk of covering what most people already know Dr. Emoto made a study of water and how its frozen crystalline structure alters depending upon the thoughts, emotions and words projected upon it.

The human body is made up largely of water, and so it becomes clear the potential affect thoughts and words can have upon our physical being. But why would the influence of such energy stop there? The power of words can carry much further…stop and give a few moments consideration to that! For most people it is clear how quickly negative energy can transmit from person to person – just as positive energy works in a similar sort of way. Some people have such an abundance of positive energy that it can make you feel wonderful just to be around them. They walk into a room and brighten everyone up. Such energy isn’t limited to functioning on a local level.
Over time, societies take on an a mass consciousness, and just as with the case of individual thought forms, this group consciousness likewise has its own energy and power. That power reaches out and influences not only the people within that group, but also everything and everyone around that group, from the land to the air to the animals. Over centuries such heritage can have massive effect upon landscapes and environments. Think of some towns near to you, how many of the run down towns have “trashy” sounding names? How many of the upmarket areas have posh sounding names?

Over the course of millennia people adopt certain traits and living styles because of the nature of their environment – they are effected be the geology and formation of the landscape around them. The consciousness of larger populations in turn affects the geology and landscape of the country and land in which they reside. Rudolf Steiner wrote extensively of this phenomenon.
This entire concept can be extended even further and into the realms of theology. How many millions of prayers are uttered every day? What is the nature of many of these prayers, how many of them are formed from self centered desire; “Please help me get more money.”, “Get me a better job.”, “Make me strong.”, “Teach those others the errors of their ways!”…and on and on. The intent behind such prayers is not at all one of positivity and wholeness, instead they are rooted in extreme negativity. What effect could this have upon the target of such prayers? The power of our thoughts can change our reality – what then do the power of our thoughts do unto our gods?
…and indeed, how many gods have been brought into existence by such energies?

That is the power which is at work around us – and it has a profound impact upon everything it touches. Societies have a way of riding their own thought currents. Certain patterns and ideals get set in place, and built up over periods of time. These ideals take on their own momentum and ultimately set a course for that society. A course that usually ends up being followed without much real consideration – this is what is happening in the world right now. Certain thoughts and belief patterns have been set in motion, and everything that unfolds from those beliefs, is very much knee-jerk reactions. It is a form of thought manifestation. Unfortunately it is an unconscious thought manifestation, as most people are still asleep and think in an unconscious manner – they simply flow along with the currents that these energies dictate.
It is a profound mistake to believe that reality creation requires a force of positive will. Positive will is only required to create a positive reality. Positivity arises from personal development, compassion, awareness, and conscious thinking (among many other things). Negativity is entropic; it can be found in unconscious thinking, selfishness, greed, destructive acts, and expansionist ideals.
Both forms of thinking have the power to manifest reality. History shows that positivity within a few has the power to carry entire societies and cultures upwards. Conversely, when a certain critical mass of negativity is reached a collapse begins. Right now our society is on an ebb of change. Technology has given a whole new edge to reality creation – thoughts of millions can very easily and very quickly be focused upon certain acts and beliefs. This aids both negative and positive forms of thinking.
The course at this moment then is to be aware enough to make a decision into which stream you wish to flow.
