Seeing Yourself

Camera inside your HeadHow do you see yourself? By that, I don’t mean how do you see your position in life, or your status, or even your appearance. What I am getting at is this; Where is your own ‘inner eye’ located?

Your ‘inner eye’ is how your awareness views you.

Mine tends to face inwards - not in a spiritual manner - but rather in a somewhat introverted manner. I watch the world based upon observations of my emotions, I see and feel my body language based upon those watching me. In allegory it is like being an animated camera which everyone looks at. Naturally when I was younger, this all showed in my mannerisms and I was therefore extremely self-conscious. Over the years I learned to deal with that, and now the self-conscious aspect is rarely an issue.

So, my ‘inner eye’ is very watchful of my own actions, very sensitive to any emotional shifts. It has the first-person observational point-of-view of being a camera, and that awareness is located somewhere near the bass of my skill - just above my spine.

Now this is a very interesting subject because different people keep their ‘inner eye’ in different locations. For example; a third-person observational point-of-view. Kinda like CCTV. How many of you sometimes secretly imagine yourself to be on a TV show or movie, whilst you go about certain parts of your day? Watching your own actions as though you are on screen. I know I occasionally find myself doing that.

Sometimes to see what it feels like, I move my ‘inner eye’ to that third person view. For the most part it is less self-conscious than my normal view. I tend to have a mental image of my actions as though I am standing outside of myself. So that camera which is normally inside my mind, is instead hovering etherically somewhere nearby. I feel my emotions inside of me of course, but my observational awareness of the world is slightly detached from my emotions, because my actions exist outside of my mind rather than inside. It’s a neat experience. There are many people who keep their ‘inner eye’ in such a place.

Some people stow their ‘inner eye’ alongside their intellect. Other people keep their ‘inner eye’ in their eyes - for them everything exists outside of themselves. There are no doubt millions of permutations. Understanding where a persons ‘inner eye’ is located really does help with communication. Part of the problem with the our use of language is that it doesn’t always clearly express whether we watch the world from an internal view-point or an external one. Clear concise language can help - but at other times a form of translation is required to simply bridge the barrier between the differing points of view.

Try and work out where your own ‘inner eye’ is located. You maybe able to do this quickly, or it may take a bit of time. Meditation can help somewhat. Also, try moving your ‘inner eye’ between different perspectives. Its kinda like seeing the world as a different person.

It’s fascinating to share where you experience your ‘point of awareness’ from! Why not tell me about yours?

I found this post via Ellis Taylor’s site. I must say you really have intrigued me!! I may try this out for myself.

Now I am all curious about how many people would actually sit and do this!
