We are our Reality…

There’s two main levels to perception. Message and Content; message being the sentence, content being the words. In order for communication to be effective, it requires we look past the words and pay attention to the message. This is pretty tough because certain words are very loaded, and we all have personal bias towards some words. In short it’s very common to miss the message because we are too caught up on the words.
This goes on all the time at every level of society, from misunderstandings between friends and family – to direct manipulation by media and governments. It’s very easy to mis-interpret someone when we focus on a specific word rather than the overall meaning. By the same token it’s very easy to manipulate people by using certain loaded words; “fear”, “economic woes”, “terrorism”…
The idea of “Message and Content” can be taken so much further; it literally applies to our very perspective on life. As a personal example, I have a very tough time dealing with ‘content’ because my focus is always on the ‘message’. This manifests in my life as having difficulties talking about ‘everyday activities’ with people. My focus is always on the ‘message’ – that underlying force which drives peoples everyday activities. On the other hand many people are more focused on content than they are on message. Getting caught up in our own perspective is very easy – and it causes us to miss what drives our perspectives. It’s pretty obvious we need to strive for a balance of the two.
I was told a great quote recently; “There are as many rainbows as there are people.” And this is very relevant, because in the end we become our perspective. We are what we do…
