What is Intent? Law of Attraction, Dreaming and Meditation

Many theories talk about setting intent. Law of Attraction is a great example; setting your intent for what you want to attract. But I wonder what this means to “set my intent”? Because the way I see it – and from my own experience, there are a great many ways to set my intention on something. Intent isn’t just a mental image after all. Here are a few ways I have experienced intent:
- Mental intent: Set an idea in my mind for something I want to achieve, or expect.
- Emotional intent: An emotional feeling focused around meeting a person or getting involved with some event or experience.
- Physical intent: This one is especially notable for those that are sports orientated or have been involved in martial arts. The intent is a feeling that is imbued across the whole physical body, and has little to nothing in common with mental intent.
- Ethereal intent: Used when attracting lucid dreams or dream recall. The intent is set within the energy / non-physical body.
And that is just a few; there are no doubt other ways of setting our intention upon something. The point I am trying to get at here is regarding the ideas behind the modern interpretation on The Law of Attraction. The notion of setting intent is never clearly defined; it is simply said “Set your intent.” Some people may not even know how to do that.
Setting intent is much more than just mentally envisaging something. Creating an image inside our heads is pretty easy to do – in-fact most of us do it everyday when we find ourselves day-dreaming. Intending in that way is fairly aimless – as far as I see it.
Recently I have been trying to lucid dream again; and that is very much about setting your intent, because without doing so it is unlikely you will end up dreaming lucidly (unless you already do so). In this case it is about intending with the ethereal / energy body. Once you have gone to sleep your conscious mind has all but disappeared, so it would do little good to intend with a mental image in your conscious-mind.
Meditation really helps in this regards, because eventually you get to distinguish between the various aspects of your being.

Personal I just feel that many ideas in recent times are viewed in terms of physical / mental concepts. And that just takes so much away from the reality of who we are and what we are capable of.
If you don’t really meditate or haven’t experienced different parts of your being, one trick you can try is this. Stay up a bit later than usual, and when you go to bed – keep constant attention of the sensations of your body. You will start to feel how your awareness changes as you drop off to sleep; with a bit of practice you may get to experience your ethereal body and other aspects of your being. Once you have done this a few times, you will be able to feel these aspects of yourself even in a waking state – all it will require is a bit of focus and concentration upon the same feelings you felt whilst going to sleep.
At the end of the day it all comes down to experience and how that affects our perception of things doesn’t it?

Very interesting view on intent, Marcus. I’d never really looked at intent in that context before.
My take on intent tends to be based on the following format:
1. I ask myself if the intent is based on “want” or “need”
2. If the intent is based on “want” I don’t set an intent. Why not? Think of the “careful what you wish for” proverb.
3. If the intent is based on “need” I will ask myself a second question. “Do I have the will to see this intent through to its conclusion?”
Why the 2nd question? Intent(ion)s are all well and good but if one doesn’t have the will to make them a reality then nothing will come of the intent. One gets what one puts into something.
Cheers
[ Quote ]“Will” is another thing that can be viewed in a number of different ways isn’t it?
[ Quote ]Very true. Isn’t English a wonderful language?
[ Quote ]Yep. The word language always makes me think of computer programming.
But then human language also programs us - just like computer language programs computers. And that puts a very different slant on corporate, political and media word usage.
That’s what got me thinking a little more about how the word ‘intent’ is often used…
