So there is this thing about getting inspiration for your my space profile - it’s a background thing, and in many ways full of pictures, glitter, and all manner of themes. A new age is upon us; digital orientation, video induction - music beating in a never ending rhythm. This new movement is all about creating an on-line digital representation of yourself and in many ways it is merely about generating new layouts of your life. In graphical form no less. Something for friends to see; a personalized, self-styled super-star - a moment created for youtube.
It is interesting to see these networks developing, linking people together across the globe in a massive web. It’s all somewhat ethereal as it doesn’t exist in a physical sense. And so these profiles are being projected into this virtual myspace - creating a community of poster boards. Virtual resumes to pimp your personality; maybe someone out there will like what they see, perhaps if you add a price tag onto your profile…
…well you never know…
What is being created is a Digital Self - perhaps it is the beginnings of a trend that in the future will develop into a fully fledge Avatar. Just like in the virtual worlds of Second Life, except it will be a real world; replicating every little detail of our reality, and enhancing it to the five physical senses - making it more real than real.
Sony are taking the next step - a natural progression called Home. Of course these worlds will be designer worlds - optimised to 100% efficiency for commercial interests. Virtual clothing label, gadgets and furniture will be off the highest aspirations. No kidding. It’s already happening; the next stage is already on it’s way.
It is the attempted mastery of the non-physical. The creation of ethereal world’s by physical hands and physical means. The entrance into these realms doesn’t require awareness of one’s own consciousness or practice in meditative techniques. Instead it merely requires money, a computer and a bit of know-how. I don’t think it is possible to over-emphasis this point. Non-physical realms created by physical means.
On the one hand western culture is slowly waking up to the idea of spiritual and metaphysical beliefs; thought manifestation, meditation, dreaming, alternative realities, the paranormal. It’s a on going process…slow…but it is happening.
On the other hand this spiritual evolution is being matched almost step-by-step by the materialistic realm.
It all leads to a whole host of implications and possibilities…
