Your Definition of Spirituality…

I often get asked how I define “spirituality”. Truth be told, it can be a bit of a tough question to answer - after all there are many possible answers. So with that said, I want to put the question out there to everyone.

“What is your definition of spirituality?”

I will collate all your responses into a single post, your definition will be attributed to yourself, along with a link to your site - if you have one.

I really feel this is one of the best approaches to getting a broad view on how people view spirituality, because it puts the whole question out in the field – allowing for an expansive answer without ending up with too many specifics. The more perspectives we can gain on how each individual views spirituality - the greater our awareness of the subject can potentially grow.

So get writing! Try and keep your answer relatively short, say, no more than 150 words – that way there is more chance people will read through all the responses rather than just a few of them! I will also add my view on spirituality on the final post.

I can’t wait to see your answers!

It is said that in America spirituality is a mile wide & an inch deep. Sometimes that is the case.
I think spirituality is a natural curiosity of, and a wish to seek out the higher self. The search for ones own soul.

That part of you, your higher self, God part, soul if you like that is disconnected from the physical body. Always seeking to learn and obtain knowledge of the other realms, astral planes and to bring that into existence. Knowledge that we are infinite immortal beings that exist.

Spirituality is a close walk with all that is divine… understanding the nature of the force of the Great Spirit that is within you, that has created all that is. Spirituality is understanding that the nature of things we percieve as evil are what aids us toward growing to what is pure, if we allow it. Spirituality is the morning dew under the glistening of a rising sun, listening to the voice of Spirit through the voice of the wind.

Religion is a statement of mankind’ religion.
The beliefs and desires he holds closest to his heart.
Whatever virtues he attempts to live by.
And the potential he feels in himself, are project outward.

The gods, and goddess, then are a reflection.
Yet they hint, at inner realties not realized or expressed.

The devils and demons then, are projections of man’s fears.

My personal definition of spirituality, is the pursuit of excellence.
For me what is excellent is beautiful and satisfying to the soul.

To me, what is “spirit” is essentially what is not ego and not physical, that subatomic “empty space” within us that connects us to the Tao, the Great Emptiness. This part of ourselves can only be reached by going beyond thought and physical reality; this pursuit or level of awareness I would term spirituality.

As a belief, Spirituality is the conviction that something exists beyond the perception of our five natural senses. Sometimes those beliefs extend to things which *are* perceived by our natural senses, even when a complete explanation involving only those natural senses is available.

It is a method of explaining experiences which the person who had the experience cannot explain in natural terms.

Spirituality for me is about learning about what isn’t.

Said more clearly, it’s exploring and experiencing that which is not in the physical world. Away from thoughts and feelings and towards purpose and direction. Why we have passion and drive to live our lives to the fullest. Why there is unconditional love and the connection we share with one another. Why there are such concepts as beauty, music, creativity, imagination and peace, and also why humans are the only “animals” that experience these things.

Sprituality is about exploring all of these ideas, enriching our lives, and using what we learn to become better people for ourselves and each other.

Spirituality: the pursuit of understanding of those aspects of human experience which are not subject to materialist reduction. (i.e.- the experience of “blue”… material/rational/scientific knowledge and understanding of it is possible in exquisite detail, but will not communicate the experience of “blue” to a blind person)

At present, spirituality represents to me the superhuman effort towards becoming a recipient of the higher truth, knowing that truth can never be sought, nor determined, but revealed.

Spiruality, what is it, where does it come from, I believe that it lives in us all, in me, it lives deep down inside of me, in a place that cannot be described, or pinpointed. I think that in our fast moving world we lose the communication between “it” and ourselves, but now and then, in a quiet moment it surfaces, we give and receive love, appreaciate the beautiful world we live in, and look kindly upon everyone we meet, forgiving all transgressions, relinquishing the past, and finding the peace which we all strive so hard for,we all have the power to connect to our inner spirit, I hope that you are all able to do so, go in peace, live in love, and be happy, enjoy the sight of beauty in our world, remember it is ours to cherish

Seems to me Jane, that you are totally on the right track. The only thing we can be sure of is that all answers to this question come from the mind. I think we need to look elsewhere for spirituality…

Spirituality is you. Being in touch with your soul and one with self. Spirituality varies from person to person, some people do not know themselves at all only what they think is themselves. Some people have such a great spirituality that they can see other people’s spirituality

The definition of spirituality can be best understood in Hinduism! Spirituality simply means every living form primarily is spiritual… a spiritual being… a cosmic essence that manifests the cosmic system! As detailed in various sacred scriptures of world… our soul atman… the spirit within is absolute master and controller of body and not vice versa!

As per Bhagavad Gita meaning of spirituality means diving deep into inner self and realizing our true identity… our soul atman… the spirit within! It is only through path of spirituality human beings gained enlightenment (kaivalya jnana) and finally salvation (moksha). The stage of enlightenment can never be reached via path of religion… path of rituals!

We need understanding difference between spirituality and religion. For reaching God we need traveling path of spirituality… path of absolute wisdom! God Almighty can never be reached via path of religion… path of bhakti yoga!
